THE SILVER WEIMARANER

By Chad Warwick

Theyre often called grey ghosts, because of their short, sleek coats distinctive color. The Weimaraner is a grey dog possessing a regal demeanor, and were called the Weimer Pointer in the past"for Weimer Court and the noblemen belonging to it, who sponsored the breeds development. It is bred for speed, bravery, intelligence, and the ability to track"this dog is an outstanding game hunter and a formidable participant in many dog sports.

A result of careful German breeding, the Weimaraner comes from the same general stock as other German breeds. It is believed to be a descendant of the Bloodhound, and it was used to hunt bears, wolves, boars, elk and deer. When big game no longer became common to hunt, the Weimaraner settled into its role as a bird dog and hunting companion.

The Weimaraner is noted for its nimbleness, courage, and endurance in the hunt. With its high trainability, it is a friendly and obedient member of the family. It is amiable towards children, and loves being considered one of the family or pack. Its short, sleek hair makes it easy to groom and maintain.

Developed from the Red Schweisshund, which is a scenter and a tracker itself descended from the Bloodhound, the Weimaraner is closely related to the German Shorthaired pointer. Weimaraners are highly energetic animals, since they were originally bred to hunt all day with their masters! So if you expect a dog that doesnt move around too much, it might be better to consider a less rambunctious breed than a Weimaraner!

True to most large hunting breeds, the Weimaraner should be given plenty of exercise, and in order to avoid him going out to stalk game, he should be best kept in a fenced yard. His instincts will tell him to track or hunt small animals and birds because of his hunting dog traits. Unlike most hunting breeds, though, the Weimaraner, or Weim is a house dog and should also be given a lot of love and attention from the family to avoid him becoming melancholy and listless.

The Weimaraner loves hikes, playing ball, romping and nothing could make him happier than a day in the field. Exercise is a must for this lively, spirited dog! Daily brisk walks to keep his body in condition and firm obedience training to keep him under control to show him who is boss in the pack will give you a stellar pet.

The Weimaraner is noble, stately and able-bodied. Their curious eye color and short, glossy coats give them a regal bearing that you cannot find in most other breeds. The eyes can be light amber, gray, or blue gray, and the fur can come in mouse-gray, charcoal-blue, or silver-gray: they are sometimes affectionately described with the phrase moonlight on chocolate.

The rare silvery-gray coat color is the product of breeding for this recessive gene. The Weimaraner is referred to as the silver or grey ghost due to this. The hardy, diligent and faithful Weimaraner will make a terrific addition to your home, and your family. - 23802
