Protect Yourself From The Dangers Of Spray Tanning

By Jenna Smith

Spray tanning salons have popped up in many cities in recent years. More and more people are getting tans by various sunless tanning methods.

The primary reason is the belief that it is completely safe. This notion is somewhat true but not entirely.

The FDA is on record stating that the main active ingredient in spray tanning solution is safe when applied directly on the skin. This statement has given people a false sense of security.

Dihyroxyacetone might be safe when applied on the skin but it is dangerous if inhaled or if it comes in contact with the face, especially the eyes, lips and nostrils.

The Food and Drug Administration actually advises people to wear eye goggles, nose plugs and to cover their lips when getting a spray on tan. This advice is ignored because the tanning salons don't enforce such recommendations.

Another troubling aspect is that spray tanning solutions also include other chemicals that are very potent and dangerous to the health of people. Chemicals such as mercury are sometimes used and mercury is indeed dangerous.

Such information usually escapes the mind because many folks have stubbornly believed that spray tanning to be safe.

This could very well be correct but using some caution is a good thing. Find out what chemicals are in the tanning solution before it goes on your body.

Following the FDA advice to wear protective eye goggles and to protect your lips is vital to safety. As is avoiding inhalation of the fumes generated by the tanning solution.

The more a person knows and the more aware they are the less likelihood for regret. Don't rely on the tanning salon to protect your health, you must be proactive in this regard. Their main interest is to make money and not your health.

Follow common sense and you'll be fine. And after all common sense is that a synthetic product is almost never a safer alternative to something natural.

Yes, too much sun can be very bad for you but believing that spray tanning is the safer alternative is not totally correct.

The fact is spray tanning is relatively new and it will take many years until will fully understand any repercussions from this sort of tanning.

Using common sense and using caution whenever we get a sunless tan is probably in our best interest. - 23802
