From its glorious name Coton de Tulear, one can readily assume a cottony soft and silky smooth fluffy coat for this dog. But that's not all there is to it because this miniscule canine creature is also very funny, charming and every bit an entertainer. Though this dog has only been introduced to the West two decades ago, this royal dog of Madagascar is undoubtedly one of the newest breeds to watch out for.
The Coton de Tulear was discovered, secluded and enjoyed by the people of Madagascar, by a visiting western physician. Not very long after this encounter, the tiny dog was traveling across oceans towards Europe and North America. In Madagascar, the Coton lived for decades among the elites of the society.
This fluffy breed, like its Bichon contemporaries, is every bit lovable and stately in disposition and form, and French in expressive facial emotions. Most Cotons are found in colors of white and black, pure white, and tri-color which is a combination of white, black and brown. True to its name, its body is wrapped with a fluffy and soft-as-a-cotton coat all over its body.
In order to maintain the luscious and pretty coat of the Coton, regular grooming is needed. On a daily basis, it is best to comb and brush the hair of the Coton and the excess hair on the ears and foot padding should be clipped. This breed needs to be given a bath once or twice per year.
Like a true comedian, the Coton will give its master and audience a good show because this breed loves to perform and please people. It is known to perform tricks such as standing, walking and jumping using only its two feet. In socialization, this pet is superb since it is very friendly towards children and other dogs and animals.
This breed is gentle, loving and always on a chirpy mode and rarely grumps and whines. It is much attached and devoted to its master therefore it tends to experience separation anxiety when the master constantly needs to be away. Albeit its small size, the Coton is quick-witted, highly trainable and independent.
The Coton is very alert and thus makes a very good watchdog. It also has a natural stubbornness within and so sometimes it plays deaf to the commands of the master. This dog is also unique in its vocal sounds especially when it whines about something or is happy because it gives out a vocal noise as a form of expression.
The ancestors of the Coton are said to have been brought to Madagascar by pirates, the common inhabitant of the island then. Madagascar is a famous pirate island and these sea bandits usually come to this island to hide and stock their stolen treasures and this includes the Coton ancestors. The Coton lived in the island for centuries as a companion dog of the Merina tribe and is considered the island's national dog. - 23802
